Styles we offer and our approach to teaching!
Our Training Styles & Curriculum
At JM Modern Jiu Jitsu, we pride ourselves on offering a complete, world-class grappling education. Rather than limiting our students to just one aspect of ground fighting, our hybrid curriculum integrates the highest-level techniques from multiple martial arts disciplines.
Whether your goal is self-defense, high-level competition, or just getting in the best shape of your life, our diverse training styles ensure you build a versatile, well-rounded skill set.
Here is a breakdown of the core styles we offer and integrate into our curriculum:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
The foundation of our academy. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage, technique, and timing to control and submit opponents, regardless of size or strength. We offer comprehensive training in both traditional Gi and No-Gi formats. You will learn the art of distance management, guard passing, sweeping, and an array of submissions (chokes and joint locks) that make BJJ the most effective ground-fighting martial art in the world.
Folkstyle Wrestling
The traditional style of American scholastic and collegiate wrestling. Folkstyle is heavily centered on controlling your opponent, maintaining top position, and explosive takedowns. By integrating Folkstyle into our curriculum, our students develop incredible base, pressure, and the ability to dictate exactly where the fight takes place—whether staying on top or working back to your feet.
Freestyle Wrestling
Recognized globally and featured in the Olympic Games, Freestyle wrestling emphasizes explosive takedowns, throws, and turns. Training in Freestyle wrestling sharpens your athletic timing, shot mechanics, and mat awareness, allowing you to transition seamlessly from standing to dominant ground positions.
Greco-Roman Wrestling
Unlike other wrestling styles, Greco-Roman strictly forbids holds below the waist, focusing entirely on the upper body. This discipline teaches elite-level hand fighting, pummeling, body locks, and high-amplitude throws. Learning Greco-Roman mechanics gives our grapplers a massive advantage in the clinch and superior upper-body control.
Judo
The legendary Japanese martial art focused on maximum efficiency and mutual benefit. Judo brings dynamic sweeps, trips, and powerful throws (Nage-waza) to our standing curriculum. You will learn how to use an opponent’s own momentum against them, allowing you to transition perfectly from a standing exchange directly into a dominant submission hold on the mat.
Russian Sambo
A rugged, highly effective Soviet martial art that translates to "self-defense without weapons." Sambo seamlessly blends elements of wrestling and Judo, and is world-renowned for its aggressive takedowns and devastating leg lock entries. Integrating Sambo concepts into our modern hybrid curriculum gives our students a unique, unpredictable edge in the submission grappling landscape.
Why Choose Our Hybrid Approach?
The modern grappling landscape is evolving rapidly. To be a truly complete martial artist, you cannot afford to have blind spots in your game. By combining the submission prowess of BJJ, the elite control and positioning of Wrestling, the dynamic throws of Judo, and the aggressive leg locks of Sambo, JM Modern Jiu Jitsu offers a unique, all-encompassing system that you won’t find anywhere else.
